Teach Yourself Course

An Extract from Section One

NOTE
Connectedness has been chosen as the demonstration movement for both the Teach Yourself Course and the Correspondence Course to give continuity to the extracts. In this excerpt a general description of connectednessis is given. In the correspondence course extract another aspect is looked at to give more insight into connectedness.

Description of Connectedness
Connectedness - this refers to the number of letters that are joined within words. It is a very individual feature. Contrary to what you might expect, writing that is all joined up is not the ideal. By the same token too many interruptions are not too good either. What we seek ideally is a balance, with some letters unconnected within words, while others are joined up.

The sample below illustrates connected writing.

EXCEPTIONS
There are times when disconnected writing can be misleading. For example, the writer may have developed the habit of writing this way because of his work, as in the case of a draughtsman or printer. Equally the writer may have been taught like that.
